The Ignorance of Protocol

Nothing can be more frustrating to us than to see, hear and know that the instructions on a disinfectant are impossible to follow in the "real world":

  • Pre-clean the surface
  • Apply the disinfectant and let dwell for the prescribed period, and
  • If it is a quaternary, phenolic or bleach - rinse with potable water.

What we have heard time and time again is:

  • "Who has time to wait 10 minutes?"
  • "Who ever goes back to rinse?" and
  • "Why does it need to be pre-cleaned? Won't it still work?"

The truth of the matter is that ALL of these questions are valid, BUT one needs to be address.

The Need to Pre-clean?

This really is an ESSENTIAL step. We can't stress enough that cleaning is the removal of soil and bio-burden. When a test is conducted in a lab, we can assure you that your or anyone's disinfectant was tested with less soil load than is common on environmental surfaces. Increase the soil load and you reduce the efficacy of the disinfectant - ESPECIALLY quaternaries.

Making one pass on a surface with a damp (treatment: 100ppm of an Envirotab Solution) microfiber or ProTab Cloth, and drying with a dry microfiber will, in most instances remove nearly 100% of all surface contaminants.

Dwell & Rinse?

The period of dwell has been dropping like a rock - a real race to ZERO. As the world has moved to oxidizers, they have found the class of disinfectant that can deliver broad kill, and usually in 3 minutes or less.

Rinsing is never required with Chlorine Dioxide, especially given that its active ingredient is a gas, and it residue is non-existent.
